NBA Free Agency 2009 - The Who, What, Where and When

A little more than 24 hours in and the NBA free agency period has been a whirlwind. We will try our best to keep you updated with moves that have happened as they happen:

To kick things off yesterday, the Pistons wasted no time making things happen, signing Ben Gordon to a five-year deal worth $55-million. Not long after, they announced that they had signed Gordon's former UConn teammate, Charlie Villanueva to a five-year deal worth $35 million. Interesting thing to note: Gordon apparently has agreed to come off the bench. If this is the case, you're paying an awful lot of money for a back up who doesn't play defence and needs the ball in his hands to score.

Update -- According to an ESPN.com article, the Bulls did not make an offer to Gordon before he signed with the Pistons:

"I mean, they didn't pursue me at all. They didn't even make an offer, so it was pretty much a one-man race. It is what it is. Like I just told you, there was no offer made. So you guys can put it together. I'm happy about my new situation now. I'm looking forward to it."

In the least surprising news of the day, Kobe Bryant chose not to opt out of his contract with the Lakers, however, it appears as though Trevor Ariza and the Lakers may not be able to continue their partnership as LA doesn't seem to be willing to offer the kind of cash Ariza is commanding. Toronto and Portland are mentioned as potential suitors with Cleveland also coming into the picture.

Also on the Raptors front, rumour is they are still trying to see if they could secure Hedo Turkoglu, but to do so would be pricey. It seems more likely that Turkoglu will end up in Portland when all is said and done.

Target No. 1 for the Raptors is Linas Kleiza, currently of the Denver Nuggets. Sources say Kleiza is high on the Raptors list and that of all of the names being floated around with Toronto, this looks most likely to happen.

The Grizzlies and Clippers made a trade with L.A. shipping Zach Randolph to Memphis for Quentin Richardson. The move frees up space for rookie Blake Griffin.

After a breakout playoff run, the Orlando Magic's Marcin Gortat has been wooed by both the Dallas Mavericks and Houston Rockets. Houston wasted no time, giving Gortat the midnight visit late Tuesday night.

Shaquille O'Neal was in Cleveland Wednesday and after undergoing his physical was introduced as a member of the Cavaliers earlier this afternoon. How did he open his press conference? By showing the crowd this photo.

The Knicks and Mavericks appear to be in a bidding war for Jason Kidd, with each team set to offer him three-year deals. In addition to Kidd, ESPN reported that the Knicks had also invited veteran Grant Hill into town for a visit.

One of the most in-demand players available this offseason is Rasheed Wallace and Boston is hitting the ground hard to try to nab him.

Ron Artest is another guy who could end up being the missing piece of the puzzle for a team getting poised to make a championship run. While he may return to Houston, he has made no secret of his desire to compete for a championship next season.
