Hello, Toronto! Turkoglu Chooses Raptors Over Blazers

You heard it on The Score Tonight with Tim and Steve (say what?) earlier. Now it has been confirmed by The Globe and Mail

In a monumental shift over the course of a few hours, reports that Hedo Turkoglu had agreed to a deal with the Portland Trail Blazers were squashed when new reports that Turkoglu was actually joining the Toronto Raptors surfaced.

The Raptors were believed to be Turkoglu's first choice, but the club did not seem willing to match the offer Portland tabled. All that seems to have changed.

The Blazers deal was reported to be for five years, $50 million, while the deal with Toronto was reported to be five years and $56 million. The move would likely mean the Raptors will have to renounce free agents Shawn Marion, Anthony Parker and Carlos Delfino.

For those wondering how this reported move impresses Chris Bosh at all, Bosh's latest Twitter update reads "IF IT'S TRUE..Let's get it cracking H Turk!!!"

More details to follow.

Love the signing.. might be a bit overpaid! but love what BC is doing with the Raptors.. this might give Bosh the incentive to stay.. but no one knows where his head his.. anyways BC (colangelo) keep up the good work!

Turkoglu might be overpaid but Toronto might get its first good small forward probably since they had Tracy McGrady. I agree with... Shreyas.... Bosh might agree to an extension because of the direction that T.O. is headed.

Bosh is gonna play with an allstar for 1st since his early years playing with Toronto's #1 Public Enemy Vince Carter. Turkoglu and Bosh with Calderon and Bargnani can go high in the Eastern Conference. This move will not be a blow up like Jermaine O'neal. Also I disagree with raps1 because his wife wants to come to toronto BADLY because of the european flavour toronto has.

I say Turkoglu in T.O no doubt.

IF I COULD HAVE PICKED ONE FREE AGENT TO SIGN IT WOULD HAVE BEEN HEDO... I LOVE THE SIGNING. IS HE A LITTLE OVERPAYED? MAYBE OR MAYBE HE IS JUST UNDERRATED.

Like i said good signing.. but I also would've loved to see delfino back in a raps uniform, but when you have the chance to upgrade at the SF position then why not take that chance.. and with their lineup..

C Bargnani

PF Bosh

SF Turkoglu

SG DeRozan

PG Calderon

I think their right up there with the other teams that have made big off season moves. It'll also give other teams problems because of the problems Turkoglu created for other teams (cavs in the playoffs)! I can't wait to watch the raps if infact he does come to the Raptors!

i think Bosh will love the signing he and Turk are friends from what i understand, & we now have a starting 5 that can match up with most other teams.

im so pumped. hopefully BC can turn Hump and maybe a future draft pick into a couple bench players and this team will be the best Toronto has had in a while

I don't like this.   Hedo, Andrea and Bosh is a pretty soft front line.   Who will get the boards?   And then, look at our bench!

Hedo is what Andrea may eventually become.

The Cavs should be all over Hedo and do whatever is possible including Hedo signing with Toronto, then a Sign n Trade.

Good signing, our starting line-up looks a lot better than before

All the raps need to do now is get depth at the SF and SG positions, now that delfino, parker, graham are gone for good.

Great signing.  BC, time to trade Bosh for a package including David Lee.

terrible move this leaves us with no bench and no more money to spend bosh is all but gone now this team needs marion, delfino, and kleinas not another overpaid shooter with no D

Not to burst everyones bubble, but when Hedo Turkoglu started with Orlando it took him sometime to be the player he was now. Thanks to Stan Van Gundy, his stock rised from the grave. If this deal becomes official the pressure is on Jay Triano & his henchmen to make this team successful in the 2009-10 season. Or else he might follow Sam Mitchell's footstep.

Not the answer we needed...Bargnani, Bosh, Turk, DeRozan, Calderone?  not a bad starting line but too big, teams will go small and run around our soft and now extra slow defense.  Who's going to be on the bench? Turks good, not great, $11 Mil is a bit steep, plus how much money will we have for Bosh in 2010?

Exciting deal for the city, but the wrong deal.  We needed Marion, Delfino, and Kleiza.

i agree.  marion, delfino, and kleiza provides athleticism, depth and toughness without breaking the bank and could've had a solid 9 man rotation.  now we are stuck with an overpaid turk and i just hope that he won't turn into peja stojakovic who after signing that 12 mil dollar deal, who now avgs 11pts and 3 rpg.  oh btw, he doesn't play defense either.

yes BC, you f&*ked up with JO and now we don't even have a MLE to sign a half decent player.  i guess he'll use his private jet to fly over to europe and pick up another will solomon.

f^&k!

Hey if you guys arent unsure that Bosh and

Derozan arent pumped with this signing, look at their status on their facebook and twitter :)

Horrible move.  All that money for hedu. Shouldve gotten David lee, and kleiza, traded bosh for a good sf and some picks. Even take Ray Allen off of bostons hands for a year or two. Very disappointed, another season gone with no toughness d or rebounding. Did not improve were they needed too. They don't need another shooter

5 years, 50 mil was too much. 5 yrs, 56 mil? WTF?

Hedo is definitely not worth that - considering he just adds to an already woeful defense. We already had enough offense in the lineup - and it's not as though Hedo adds that slashing wing that we needed. People are getting caught up in Hedo's performance last year and his play in the playoffs - but he's been an inconsistent player for most of his career. He's now in his prime and was capitalizing on a favourable system with a legitimate low post player and numerous other perimeter threats. Where will he be halfway through a 5 yr contract (considering he's already 30)?

I would have much preferred solid wing depth in Delfino, Kleiza, Derozan & possibly Childress (who is younger and would have signed for an affordable contract compared to Marion & Turkoglu).

Now we may be left in much the same situation as last season - if not worse. With a decent starting lineup on paper - but no depth to compete with the stronger teams in the East (the same depth which won took us to our most successful season under BC).

Calderon, Ukic, Banks

Douby

Turkoglu, Derozan

Bosh, Pops, Evans

Bargnani, Jawai, O'Bryant

That's a lineup just waiting to be shredded - not least because there isn't a single above avg. defensive player in the entire team. Bargnani is never going to be a solid NBA centre either.

Paper-thin squad and Financial handcuffs here we come unless BC comes to his senses.

It is a lot of money, and the current roster looks thin, but since when did a July 4 roster determine a season?

People are forgetting that there will be impact players available for a cheap price due to the lack of teams with cap space and a frightening economy. There is an entire summer to fill out this roster with some role players/depth. If anything, this shows that there is a sense of urgency and a committment here.

OKay, Hedo is not over paid let's get that straight. he's earned his paycheck and if you take a look at him physically, he is what you want in a star player. to play with longevity and consistantly bring what he brings, look back at the last three years, he gets bigger and stronger and better. thats what you want to see in a player progression. Hedo is solid at all fasssets of the game, now he's got some guys to work on his post game with Bargnani Bosh and the others we have. but bargnani and turkoglu working together is phenominal as well as bosh.

They say he's a weak defender I think thats bullshit, in the magic it was a team defensive scheme & wether the rest of his teammates wanted to make the right decisions or not, up to them.

I think something went a lil sour, I could see it in his play. were moving on though.

wow we have a bunch of winers on this blog so far....

This is pissing me off.

We got rid of O'neal aka 20 million dollars. we have bosh with a big paycheck, and calderon with a pretty big paycheck. Reggie evans is way over payed, untill he proves to The Candyman other wise.

Don't tell me we got rid on Jermaine O'neal and his 22 million dollars this year and we can't sign any other players than Hedo. Where the f**** did that money go?  We should be ably to sign Hado and another player no problem.

The raptors need A PROFFESIONAL shooting guard who will get it done game in game out. no question mark. & a Big Body Center.

Joe I agree, July 4th roster doesn't decide what we will have this coming season and D-block I thank you for some sense.

Bargnani is goin to kill it this season, Hedo can average a double double in points and assists and guess what they asked the question who can average a triple double, I say Hedo. Why not he's been getting bigger and stronger every year. We know he can score we know he can pass and best believe he's been playin ball at 6"10 for a lot of years he can rebound.

I thank you for sharing your a opinion and reading mine.

P.s: we need a get it done no bullshit shooting guard, a proffessional on the court no question mark.

EZ

I don't see how the remaining money and/or assets we have can address all the weaknesses we've had and continue to have (depth, perimeter & interior D, rebounding in the starting lineup and a slashing wing or any players that get to the free throw line in general).

Trading Bosh seems the only route to addressing at least some of these areas - as he's the only piece in the team that would net us significant quality return.

i think this is a great sign think about it superman has no shooting ability  and the pick and roll always works image with bosh ability to shot it and roll of the pick then the options Calderon and Bargnani 3point shooting and the d is still a question from starters to the bench thats a no doubt.

candyman to answer wat happen to the money(jo 22mil) we took that fuckin banks which his contract is around 4.5 mil and evans is overpaid as well

p.s i hope we make a big move to keep bosh or trade him like amare type of package

Shreyas wrote re: Hello, Toronto! Turkoglu Chooses Raptors Over Blazers

wow.. turkoglu is being a little bit overpaid! but if u guys didn't know.. marion was asking for the same kind of money and i sure know that marion isn't worth that much money.. turkoglu led the magic into the playoffs and took that team on his back when nelson went down.. and marions number her dropped significantly since u got traded out of pheonix so clearly marion needs the run and gun system.. but turkoglu is a competitor and can't help the raps in more ways then what people think he can

Panveer wrote re: Hello, Toronto! Turkoglu Chooses Raptors Over Blazers

Hedo will be good for the first 2yrs but age will catch up to him...do think he is overpaid but thats what happens when BC makes some major mistakens...ur left with moves that might not have been your first choice but raps have no choice...marion declined an offer made and doesn't seem interested in returing and raps can't go into next season with calderon, derozan, parker, delfino, evans, bargs and bosh as their rotation...would not succeed...thus left with no choice but to sign a player that can make a difference but is now overpaid and 30+ age...

Good signing, however this leaves us with virtually no bench and no cap space to sign a bench player.  I hope injuries arent a issue this season, 1 injury to one of the starting 5 and this team is toast.  However on the flip side if the team can stay healthy, and maybe a few suprises off the bench they could be in the top 4-6 range in the eastern confernce.

Hedo Turkoglu looks fit for Toronto, but i still find Calderon's style of play to be a little slow for the team. Would love to see a Steve Nash brand of play for Chris Bosh & Company.
