Paul Beirne: Having two DPs is an option for TFC

Toronto FC business operations manager Paul Beirne was a guest on the Hardcore Footy Show (Sirius Channel 98) with Brendan Dunlop, James Sharman and Kristian Jack on Monday. During the interview, Beirne said having two designated players at Toronto FC would likely be supported by the MLSE board, if they were to acquire a second spot and propose the option.

The full interview can be heard at hardcoresportsradio.com. Scroll down to the Hardcore Footy Show and look for Segment 2 of the November 17th show in the archive. Topics also discussed are the status of Mo Johnston within the club, contract negotiations with Carl Robinson and Toronto FC's television ratings.

The idea of one DP is exciting two is even better.  I think that having two DPs would take some of the pressure off of them as it wouldn't be all on one person if TFC get off to a slow start.  That said I have no idea about who TFC have in mind for one or two DP slots.

Acquiring a second spot is no easy task, but knowing that the board would likely be supportive is encouraging.

Don't drink  the MLSE Kool-aid on the 2 DP's quite yet. We've heard about the first one for quite some time and nothing ever materlized. MOJO must be picking the wedgie his speedo is giving him right now in Rio.

That would be quite an accomplishment to snag in two DP's (whether it is good or not I don't know).  I don't want to beat a dead horse, but I'd rather have 1 DP and a grass pitch.

I have to agree with Zach. I'd rather have 1 DP and a grass pitch.  But the thing is, do we even know who the first DP is going to be?

I don't see the designated player as the biggest issue facing this club right now.  There was a lot of focus in that interview from Beirne about drafts, trades, and league rules.  The third, i'll admit is very important.  The first two, not so sure.

transfers are by far the most important part of building an MLS roster.  RSL is a good example of that.  They went from zero to respectable on the back of good signings.

Draft picks hardly convert and trades are cute but i haven't seen anyone build a team on the back of them.

Mo Johnston has to improve his scouting outside of the league or he's simply not going to cut it as TFC manager.  We simply can't run through another group of Laurent Robert, Colin Samuel, Andy Welsh, etc...

Three DPs did nothing for LA.

I just wanna see some quality depth first then worry about a quality DP.

All the quote suggests anyways is that they are WILLING to pay for 2 DPs, doesnt mean they are chasing em.
