David Edgar signs with Burnley

It's official, Canada's David Edgar has landed back in the Premier League, and has signed a deal with new boys Burnley.  Looks to be a great move to me, he's going to be tested, but that is the point, he needs to be tested, rather than sitting on the bench! Hopefully that test will come at center-back!

From Joe Ross:

Yeah, so I posted this 45 minutes after Sharman wrote the above:

The Guardian reports the deal will be worth close to £10,000 per week over four years. And more importantly -- well, at least to me it's more important -- Edgar has been guaranteed first-team football. Hopefully Owen Coyle actually plays him at centre-half, and not at right back like Newcastle United did.

If Edgar does in fact get to play more often with Burnley than he did at St. James' park, this is an excellent move. The more Canadians we can get playing regularly or at least semi-regularly at the highest level the better for our national team. Profound statement there, I know.

Oh, and can we get this kid a freaking cap already?

Hat-tip to reader Kevin Smith for the find.

i hope he gets some playing time. If he would have came to TFC i would have said he's wasting his time, good for him. This will definitely make him Canada's best CB and hopefully 2014 will be the year Canada actually qualifies.

Ouch...four year deal? So, that will be 1 year in the prem and 3 in the championship?

What's even better is that Edgar won't have to play at RB. That's the role Tyrone Mears is going to fill and I was ranting and raving about his play over at Marseille just yesterday.

It would be great if someone could clarify what these new FIFA rules actually change in terms of 'capping' a player.

From what I read, it seems like 'friendlies' now don't count.

So does that mean that if David Edgar isn't playing in this Gold Cup, the next chance we have to cap him is the next Gold Cup? Or potentially the next Olympic qualifying??

Gav, as far as I know, you are right. A player can only be capped in a FIFA-sanctioned, competitive match...so a qualifier or tournament match. Edgar is not capped. I'm not sure if he qualifies for any other nation, besides England or Canada. The next Hargreaves?

James Sharman, with regard to new rules what does that mean for Ugo Ihemelu who plays for Colorado, but has Canadian Citizenship? i think at some point he had 1 cap for the u.s.a.

I hope this doesn't mean you'll all be developing a soft spot for the Clarets b/c they have a Canadian in the line-up. You'll see...those Clarets are up to no good... Edgar is probably already angling for a spot in the England 'B' side, ha,ha.

If canada doesnt give him a cap soon. i think he might join the england system. but joing burnley is great. especially if he is getting first-time action. so watch out, here comes david edgar!

hope his four year deal has a relegation clause in it as this team wont get 20 points next year nevermind stay up even wolves will get more points i think a player that could help them is a guy i hate but if i was them i would go after landon donavan i think he would help them as he has a point to prove in europe and there system i think would work for him

Bigger news...I've heard that David Hoilett has been granted a work permit, so he can now play for Blackburn Rovers (who had loaned him out to St. Pauli). Granted, Hoilett is another potential turncoat (although born and raised in Canada, having a younger brother who represents Canada at the youth levels, he has been linked with Jamaica), still an exciting player...who needs to be capped by Canada.

another dude i want capped, jonathan de guzman.  with the new fifa rule,  he's no longer tied to dutch national team and if he chooses, he can play for canada, along with this bro.  i think the chance is good, especially not playing well with feyenoord in the past year and he's likely at the bottom of totem pole for being called up for the oranje.

CSA needs to schedule a fifa sanctioned friendly asap and cap edgar, de guzman and hoillett although begovic is good as gone.

Yes, we need to cap those players...but strangely enough, they have some say in the matter.

De Guzman has already chosen Holland, while it does look like Begovic has chosen Bosnia, so even if we could cap them with a friendly (new rules seem to say that we can't), they're not likely to go.

Edgar and Hoilett might, but they're not stupid. If they're considering joining another national team, they're not going to let themselves get capped by Canada (though frankly I don't think Edgar's good enough to play for England, other than perhaps an England B team, so I don't know why he'd bother)..

Just curious james, why does it matter so much that he plays at center back and not right back?  Wouldnt it be harder to start at center back?

Edgar would play for canada. As far as i am aware he has not played for the under-21's, and possibly not been involved with the england set up at all. Though don't quote me on that.

Honestly unless Edgar improves significantly due to more playing time, he won't make any squad. the U-21 team has several very good defenders. (Honest, I watched that Final, loathe losing to the germans) Each of which will be playing first team football for a better team then burnley.

I don't think Donovan would work for Burnley. He is no where near physical enough to fit into the style they will have to play. (see stoke)
