Canada ties Costa Rica 2-2

This was a weird game for the Canadian soccer supporter.

Usually when watching Canada play in a Gold Cup match or World Cup Qualifier, I go though a six pack of Cherry Pepto Bismol while locked in the fetal position,  keeping a bottle of Jameson's on hand with the knowledge that a loss -- whether it be of the humiliating Guadeloupe variety or the "Benito the Bandit" USA rip off brand -- will in all probability send me spiraling into some type of Jimmy McNulty-style bender to end all benders.

But viewing this game was different. Canada went into the encounter having already qualified for the knockout stages of the tournament. Outside of points for the nation's FIFA ranking, the result against Costa Rica was relatively meaningless. Valuable squad members on yellow cards like Julian De Guzman and Mike Klukowski could be rested. Stephen Hart could afford to hand starts to youngsters like Jamie Peters and Simeon Jackson. After years of going into tournament games on the edge, prepared to have my heart ripped out, I found myself having trouble getting up emotionally to watch this. I mean, what's a Gold Cup match if you know there's no chance that your team might have to advance by the drawing of lots?

Highlights

Anyone else find themselves really rooting for Ali Gerba to score when he came on as a substitute? It almost seemed like Hart could sense my interest in the game was starting to wane and knew Der Cucumber Bomber's presence would bring me back in. The chase for Dale Mitchell's goals record is the story in Canadian soccer right now. Every touch in the attacking third by Ali G is like a Barry Bonds at-bat during his chase for Hank Aaron's home run record.

Jaime Peters was a bit of a surprise playing centrally -- I've always thought of him as a wide player -- but he did a commendable job in there. Obviously the midfield was lacking somewhat without De Guzman, and there were points in the second half that I just wished he could have been unleashed by Hart to start bossing those Ticos around. But that, as Spock would say, would be highly illogical.

The absence of Dejan Jakovic was felt at the back, as his ability to pass the ball on the deck was a key part of Canada's possession game against El Salvador. Hopefully he returns to the starting xi for the quarters. And hopefully Greg Sutton got that one diabolical howler out of his system relatively early in the tournament. Yeesh, was that ever brutal.

A draw serves us well in the FIFA rankings as a draw in the Gold Cup is the same as a victory in a friendly.  I am glad that our B team (that is any side with Julian in it) was able to get a result against the #2 team in CONCACAF.

PLAY UP CANADA!

Joe, that is brilliant stuff. I agree with you on almost every point. Glad you were calm for this one, I still was a little on edge after Herron scored so early on. I thought it was funny how Craig Forrest was describing it as a beautiful finish, when I'm sure if Sutton didn't fall on his arse he could've easily saved it. All in all I'm happy that Hart had the boys focused enough (for a meaningless match) to not get annihilated , and to win the group. I don't think I've seen the side so confident and well-organised...are they better than the last Gold Cup side?

I didn't even realise that Peters was playing in the centre b/c all of his moments of meaningful runs in possession seem to come when he works himself into a winger's role.

I agree on hoping Jakovic draws back into the starting role b/c he (along w/ JDG, Hutch, and McKenna) has been key to keeping the ball moving effectively from the back. Although Hastings played well, it made me cringe to see him pump the ball down the field to nobody in particular.

Oh, and way to work both "Ali G." and "Der Cucumber Bomber" into the piece.

Joe, what do you call the Canadian MNT? The Canucks? The Voyageurs?

Let's not continue to underrate Guadaloupe. Most of their players play for respectable clubs in Europe, they have scored the goal of the tourney so far and their qualification for the Q-F (possibly as group winners ahead of Mexico) shows that their semi-final appearance in 2007 was no fluke.

The Canadian team needs to start facing Sutton when he distributes the ball, as it might go anywhere. One of Jamaica's best chances against us came off a Sutton goal kick as well, so I have a feeling this is something that might happen again. Perhaps they can work on the "facing Sutton" drill over the next (gulp) week before their Q-F match.

I though Peters work in the center was more than commendable--he did most of the meaningful running through the midfield. Hutchinson was steady, but invisible for large stretches. Sutton ... what can you say? I'd rather see him role the ball out to a back and let him distribute it.

Solid performance against a Costa Rican side that just doesn't seem to be at the top of their game in this tournament.  Hopefully Sutton improves his ball distribution in the next game as he was very poor in this regard.  If he does, we might go far...

For those who were able to watch this on Sportsnet, count yourself bloody fortunate. Sportsnet Ontario was, of course, showing the Blue Jays (I'm in Ottawa for fuck's sake - I have never in my life cheered for the Blue Jays. Go Expos!....) and I don't have digital cable.

I was able to find a stream, in English, relatively easily. However, the American setanta announcers were the worst I've ever heard. The play-by-play guy kept talking about our goalkeeper Paul Sutton, and it took about 60 minutes before his partner corrected him about Julian Jackson. Speaking of the partner, he was better, but he doesn't know how to say Bernier (he said something like Burr-near).

They seemed like they were trained as if to do baseball. You know, talking about whatever they can think of because there's nothing going on. Ugh.

Yeah they played the game live on two feeds and carried the Canada game on the other two.  I was pretty happy they did this because their Jays rights usually seem to win out over the National squad.

I   thought Dobson has been doing a decent job commentating...a hell of a lot better than the Yank feed would have been..

-- True. But at the time, it was pretty soul-sapping emotionally.

Joe- Classic first paragraph. I do the same thing. Perhaps that's why my girlfriend leaves the apartment when I watch the CMNT...

Asmir Begovic- This team is yours. Come and play for us for the next 15 years. Fans, though few, will worship you, and you never know, a 2014 world cup birth might not sound so unreasonable after seeing this team play...

Jakovic's absence was felt:  Hastings isn't in the same class IMO.  That said, the Tico midfield was able to boss it somewhat so we'll have to be much better defensively  in that area against the Hondurans.  Simpson's cross and Bernier's finish were exquisite, while it was great to see De Jong's goal (can't score if you don't shoot!).

Bernier's not getting enough credit for his play:  had another consistent game whereas Hutchinson seemed not as prominent  in the deeper lying role defensive role.
