  • World Cup 2018 in England? Not if Spain & Portugal have any luck

I'm sure Kristian and James have been waiting for hours to hear my piece on this. The Spanish Football Federation have alluded to the possibility of submitting a joint bid with Portugal to host the 2018 World Cup, and goal.com is reporting they have confirmed their plans. I think this would be a massive step for both countries. First off, just putting together a plan to host the world's biggest event is a tremendous step for two countries who arguably couldn't team up to organize a poker...

  • Good News For Hume, Schuster Sacked and Replaced by Ramos

Things are looking encouraging on Iain Hume's road to recovery from a fractured skull, with the Daily Mail reporting the Canadian striker is setting a goal to return to training in two months . Hume also hasn't ruled out the possibility of playing before the end of the season according the report. Considering this wasn't just a career threatening injury but a life threatening one, I think we're talking about a best-case scenario if Hume is in fact able to return to training by February...

  • Hume Back in Hospital

Some bad news to report on the Iain Hume front. The 25-year old Canadian striker has been readmitted to hospital following complications with the skull fracture he suffered on November 8th. Iain felt unwell and began to vomit yesterday, and his family decided it was best to go back the hospital as a precautionary measure. Hopefully this is just a minor setback in his road to a full recovery.

  • Canada falls to Jamaica, Hume's scar, Johnson wins Goal of the Year

Jamaica 3 - Canada 0 A fitting end to what can only be described as a pathetic World Cup Qualifying campaign, perhaps the worst in my lifetime. I'm sort of glad this match wasn't televised because I don't want any young minds to be corrupted by viewing the sad, depressing state of the national program. Best to shield their eyes from the horrors and hope they get swept up in 2014 fever. In case anyone still cares, this was Dale Mitchell's starting xi last night: Hirschfeld, Cann, Hainault...

  • Who Says There's No Endorsement Money In Canada?

In May, 9-year old Gianni Patino of Vancouver, BC signed with Barcelona's u-12 team . It did not take long for the youngster to put his combination of newfound fame, skills and winning smile to good use. Oh yes, the kid is so good he's already selling merchandise. Check out the product at www.soccertacticsworld.com I think I speak for everyone when I say these three magic words: Cap. Him. Now. He could even bring that tactics board into the dressing room to talk pre-game strategy. And who...

  • Barnsley Considering Legal Action over Challenge on Hume

Barnsley are considering legal action after Sheffield United defender Chris Morgan fractured the skull of Canadian striker Iain Hume on Saturday. Tykes manager Simon Davey provided some insight on Hume's condition to The Guardian . "The operation went well but he is very down and very angry. He has a scar that runs from his forehead in the shape of a horseshoe right round to his ear. He is black and blue, his head is swollen and he is a mess." Davey is quite rightly fuming about the...

  • Hume Fractures Skull

Some bad news from across the pond, as Canadian striker Iain Hume fractured his skull in Saturday's Barnsley-Sheffield United match at Oakwell. Hume collided with Blades defender Chris Morgan and left the pitch holding his head. He continued to feel groggy after the match and was admitted to a hospital Sunday and taken in for surgery. The entire Footy Show crew wishes Iain all the best and hopefully he's able to make a complete recovery. Get well soon!

  • Friend Mistranslated or Perhaps Misquoted

Canada and Borussia Monchengladbach striker Rob Friend has contacted BC Soccer Web (well, national team manager Morgan Quarry contacted them on Friend's behalf) trying to set the record straight about that article in Bild we linked you to on Tuesday. Apparently he's been mistranslated and he's not happy about it. I mentioned in Tuesday's links that Friend is known for his fantastic attitude and work ethic, so those perceived negative comments on Dale Mitchell - which apparently aren't...

Report: Friend will not play under Mitchell Hat tip to SCF08 at the Voyaguers for digging up an article in Bild that has Rob Friend quoted as saying he won't play for the Kanadischer National Mannschaft under Dale Mitchell. The translated quotation : '' I've been travelling all around the world lately. It's exhausted me and got me nowhere. I dont see any future for myself at Canada with Dale Mitchell in charge. I want to fully focus myself on Borussia Mochengladbach ''I...

Fellow Group C combatants Atlante also secured a passage to the quarters with a 2-0 win at Jack Warner's god awful Joe Public FC. CBC.ca has a match report if you're looking for the details. • Gerba's status as Canada's Gerd Muller confirmed

Yeah, the game meant nothing and the future of Canadian soccer looks about as bleak as an overcast morning on Tatooine, but how about that Ali Gerba! The man just scores goals. And that strike last night was one of his finer ones. Give him 11 in 23 caps, and two in his last two matches against Mexico (for those of you who say he can only score against the weaker teams). He's now tied for 6th all-time in Canadian scoring and is just 8 goals behind leader Dale Mitchell. And he's just 26 people...

Mitchell will not resign, and his contract runs until 2010 Atiba Hutchinson and Rob Friend have been released from national team duty and are reporting back to their clubs Whitecaps striker Charles Gbeke has been called into the squad after his two-goal performance in the USL final. It's safe to say that this World...

Some more Canadian in-fighting juice from today's Globe and Mail : "'I don't know how someone who coached the under-20s to not score a goal in the World Cup was put in charge of the national team,' said [Dwayne] De Rosario, the Houston Dynamo playmaker." And there's more: Rumours are circulating that former Canadian men's national soccer team head coach Holger Osieck is being considered for his old job by the Canadian Soccer Association. Osieck, currently coaching...

  • Canada/TFC Open Thread

Hello all. Family commitments have robbed me of the joys of watching Canada and Toronto FC this weekend, so I've set up this open thread for you leave your comments on (I hope) Canada's stunning come from behind win in Honduras and Toronto's 3-0 win in Dallas. I'd also recommend Out of Touch and the Footie Fool for some pre/post/in-match reading. I see OOT already has a game-day post up taking a sloppy member of the Honduran media to task (get in!). Jim Brennan in the starting xi...
