  • Attakora-Gyan wins CSA award

PRESS RELEASE Toronto FC announced Tuesday that defender Nana Attakora-Gyan has been named the recipient of the Canadian U-20 Player of the Year Award for the 2008 season. Fifty percent of the votes were compiled by national team coaches and the other half by Canadian coaches who have taken the Canadian Soccer Association’s national course at the B and A levels. “It’s a great testament to Nana and how hard he worked last season,” said Toronto FC head coach John Carver . “It’s a great start to the...

  • Reaction to the De Rosario Deal (Yes, more reaction)

Yeah, I know I'm about the thousandth person to weight in on Toronto's acquisition of Dwayne De Rosario , but here I go anyway. DeRo's been one of my favourite Canadian players for along time, dating back to when I used to see him play with Toronto and Richmond in the A-League at Varsity Stadium. So I'll spare you from the mash note I was planning on writing him. It's a good trade, he's a good player, it's great a star Canadian is coming home. I think we all know that...

  • Catch The Hardcore Footy Show this week

For about seven minutes, the MLS actually managed to steal some headlines away from Major League Baseball's free agent frenzy with a big blockbuster trade. Toronto FC's midfield got a hell of a boost with the acquisition of DeRo, so we'll get the real deal from someone who will play alongside him all year. Rohan Ricketts will join us Monday in-studio on The Hardcore Footy Show . Catch the show LIVE this Monday at 12pm EST on Hardcore Sports Radio, Sirius 98 , or listen online at http...

  • Mo money on De Ro

It was two and half years ago that we all gathered at Scallywags Pub in Toronto, to welcome Mo Johnston into the Toronto FC fold. Since then, he has been the face of the franchise, and has been slowly building this team. Slow being the operative word, but all along Mo would say; 'listen, Rome wasn't built in a day.' Year one was to be expected a terrible on-field product, and year two wasn't much better. Mo, as the man in charge, came under much fire from many quarters, including...

  • Toronto Acquires De Rosario

PRESS RELEASE Toronto FC announced Friday they have acquired four-time MLS Cup winner and three-time MLS All-Star midfielder/forward Dwayne De Rosario from the Houston Dynamo in exchange for defender Julius James and allocation money. As per team policy, financial terms of the deal were not released. “Dwayne is a player we’ve admired for quite some time. When the chance came to work with Houston to get this deal, we were obviously very happy,” said Director of Soccer Mo Johnston...

  • The return of O Fenomeno, Sigi Leaves Columbus

Hopefully Globoesporte.com doesn't mind me ripping off their banner. Ronaldo , one of the greatest goal scorers in history, is heading back to Brazil after signing with Corinthians . There he will link up with fellow gap-toothed striker Dentinho , a 19-year old wonder kid said to be in the "Fenomeno" mold. The fact that Ronaldo is returning to Brazil isn't that surprising, but his choice of club is. Supporters of Flamengo were holding out hope he'd sign with them , knowing he...

  • Nu-"No" Gomes for TFC?, Ibrahimovic's Incredible Pass

See what I did in that headline? If you're a keen message board skimmer, you've already seen this nugget. But here it is anyway. A report from Portugal (translated by Google) states that Nuno Gomes has declined a more than double your money offer (I think) from Toronto FC. Hat-tip to Benfica supporter "Moralis" at Big Soccer for the heads-up. Disappointing news, but I'm not sure if this is a final refusal or a negotiating ploy. On the surface, rejecting a double money offer...

Schelotto back, NYRB to shop DP spot?, Changes afoot for MLS final? Lots of nuggets to get to this morning from the world of MLS. Let's open up the 20-pack and look at the highlights... We begin with good news from the Columbus Dispatch . Reigning MLS MVP and Crew captain (in the heart of Don Garber) Guillermo Barros Schelotto will be back with Columbus next season , and he will be commanding DP money at $600,000. Hard to find find any fault in that, and it's good to see the league's...

  • Toronto FC DP: Nuno Gomes?

Toronto FC fans want a designated player now. John Carver wants a designated player now and its looking more and more likely that this is going to happen. I am hearing today that people around Toronto FC have been talking about a possible swoop for Benfica's Nuno Gomes and some staff members have gone as far as to cut out his head and place it on top of a Toronto FC jersey. The 32-year-old Benfica striker would be a perfect fit as the club's first ever DP player. What do you guys think? Let...

  • TFC beer prices vs EPL beer prices!

Statistics in England have 'outed' Chelsea as an alcoholics worst nightmare. According to the stats, commissioned by Liberal Democrat culture, media and sport spokesman Don Foster, the Blues charge more for a pint of beer than any other club! Below are the raw numbers, beware, they make for some sobering reading. I find it interesting that Sunderland sells more pints per match than anyone else, which might be more of a statement on their recent play than anything. Having been stuck in the...

  • End of The Jarrod Smith Era, Beginning of the Winter Hot Stove, Justice for Hume

Thank you Seattle technical director Chris Henderson . I'm not sure if you drafted the wrong Smith by accident, cut some type of deal with Mo Johnston , or for some reason just really wanted an international with severely limited skill and upside on your team. Whatever the reason, fans of Toronto FC are grateful. And Mo, I don't know if you were being shrewd or just damn lucky with that exposed list. Either way, you escaped without giving up the asset you moved up the allocation order to...

  • Trader Mo to go to work

The MLS trade window is about to open. Toronto FC created some headlines this week with the release of their protected list for the expansion draft. Many people questioned why some players were left on that list and you have to wonder how many of those players protected will be on their opening day roster. Check Thursday's podcast for more analysis on that this week. Two players I expect to be playing elsewhere are defenders Julius James and Tyrone Marshall . Lets take James first. James had...
