Score in the Morning - Thursday October 16th

Good Morning Nation.

Here's some links to last night's news-makers in the sporting world. Leave your thoughts on these topics in the comments section and I'll let your voice be heard by reading them out on Score in the Morning.

Phillies off to the World Series

Bob Ford of the Philadelphia Inquirer waxes poetic about Cole Hamels and his no-fear attitude, while Inquirer columnist John Gonzalez calls the stunned and silenced crowd at Dodger Stadium the sweetest tune you'll ever hear.

From the L.A. Times, Bill Plaschke weighs in on the Dodgers being booed after another woeful postseason performance against the Phillies, while colleague T.J. Simers is surprising positive in his post-mortem, choosing to praise Manny Ramirez for making the Dodgers relevant again. Meanwhile at the excellent fan site dodgerblues.com, a Curse of Kirk Gibson theory is floated, as the Dodgers are "punished again by the baseball gods for the greatness of that one moment."

Romo to try and play

The Dallas Morning News says Tony Romo is going to try and play this weekend with a broken finger after initially being listed as "out" for 3-4 weeks. Apparently a conversation with Brett Favre had something to do with Romo's decision.

In other Cowboys news, Morning News columnist Jean-Jacques Taylor wonders if Terrell Owens is ready to share the spotlight with Roy Williams.

Canada draws Mexico 2-2

With nothing on the line, Canada played it's best World Cup Qualifying game to date (this cycle) writes Derek Van Diest of the Edmonton Sun. Of course, it's far too little too late for the men's team, as yet another qualifying campaign will end early for the Canadian National team. A week ago, Stephen Brunt wrote a terrific piece on the "sea of blame" surrounding the entire program. Our own James Sharman has also weighed in with his thoughts on yet another, soul sucking qualifying campaign.

Habs, Oilers both pick up wins

Nice to see the Canadian teams in action both picking up wins last night., with Carey Price shutting the door on the Bruins in a shootout, and Mathieu Garon bailed the Oilers out of a mediocre performance aginst the Ducks. That first link also has some terrific stuff from Red Fisher on his tenure in the Montreal sports media. By the way, no one can honour the past as good as the way Les Canadiens do it, no?
