I hesitate to take Don Cherry too seriously, but I realize a lot of people do, so for a moment-- again-- I'm going to pretend that I don't love Grapes only for the comic value-- which I completely do-- but also because he's some kind of respected authority on the game of hockey.
Cherry addressed the Ovechkin celebration on Saturday's edition of Coach's Corner, with his main points being that Ovechkin should be above hammy celebrations that disrespect players on the other team. Think of how that poor, pussy rookie goalie for Tampa must have felt, he implored! And he closed by telling Ovechkin that people aren't laughing with him, "they're laughing at you, Alex."
Well hang on just a fucking second here. This idiot actually has the balls-- something, evidently he thinks these poor hockey players don't have, since taunts hurt their widdle feewings so badly-- to talk about respect?
Have a listen to the start of one of his Grapeline programs from last week. Since he'd just broken the all-time record for wins, Brian Williams says, "we have to talk about Martin Brodeur"-- using the French pronunciation of his first name.
"Oh, you mean Martin?" Grapes says, anglicizing the name.
Um... hey fuckface, can you tell me how much respect it shows to insist on pronouncing a man's name wrong because you don't like the language he speaks? And not just any idiot off the street, either-- the winningest goalie in hockey history?
Oh, but maybe it's that you're an entertainer, you're just doing your shtick, eh? Funny, that kind of sounds like a giant steaming load of hypocrisy.
But I'm sure this is the only time Grapes has ever disrespected a non-Anglo player like that, right? It's not like that's how he's made his fucking living for 30 years.
