The Vancouver Pacers?

griz

Now take this with a “Big Country” Reeves-sized grain of salt—or, if you prefer, with a grain of salt the size of how much “Big Country” Reeves sucked during his brief NBA career—because it’s coming from Bleacher Report, and, as a source, I trust that unaccountable garbage aggregator about as far as I could throw Marty York in the middle of a lying contest. However, somebody named Kevin Nesgoda—who runs an anti-Clay Bennett (Sonics owner) site, and some other blog-- is claiming that his “people in the know in Indiana and and Vancouver” have informed him that Vancouver Canucks owner Francesco Aquilini has made a pitch to Pacers co-owner Herb Simon about purchasing the team and moving them to Vancouver.

Smartly, he adds, that “Simon, [giant sic on that comma] could be using Aquilini as leverage against the Indianapolis Capital Improvement Board,” with whom he’s supposedly having difficulty trying to work out a new arena deal.

Vancouver radio station, the Team 1040 is parroting the story, saying simply that “rumours are running rampant”, and adding no more information that what’s on Bleacher Report. Well, that’s a real solid foundation for a story they’ve got there.

I unequivocally call bullshit on this, but I guess I’d sort of like to be wrong. Though… more correctly, I really couldn’t possibly care less.

Typical attitude of an Eastern Canadian.

Eat a big fat penis Mr. Stoeten. Your basketball team sucks.

Wait, what attitude?

Explain where the author of this piece criticizes Vancouver in any way.  I must have missed it.

Too much time dodging junkies in the rain Eddy?

In the last line where he says he couldn't possibly care less about Vancouver getting a team again.

I'm in Toronto, why would I care if Vancouver has a team?

Eddy, do you care if Toronto has an NFL team? And if you do, why? What's it to you?

The classic anonymous clown missing the point. It's newsworthy. I think it's an interesting piece of politicking. But whether or not Vancouver actually ends up with a team again means absolutely nothing to me. Nice try.

Your getting fucking punked Stoeten, how do you feel right now? HAHAHAHA

Um... how do you figure? You mean by the clown who can't read?

Yeah Stoeten, how stupid are you for getting punked by a dude who can't even read who is arguing a point that was never in the post to begin with.

On a serious note Stoeten, you should realize that everything that happens in Toronto matters to the rest of the country. It's thinly disguised jealousy. It's kinda sad, really. You should make more of an effort to pretend to give a crap about all the other places, just to throw them a bone.

Apparently the not-able-to-read dumb as shit commenters from DJF are starting to move over here too.

Hahaha. Thanks. I hear you about the DJF commenters-- though I suspect that it's just one person whose widdle feewings I crushed once by calling him an idiot.

And it's just so off-base. Should I pretend it matters to me that Vancouver has a team? I posted it because I thought it was interesting and I thought people would find it interesting. I don't have to only post stuff when I care about the outcome one way or the other. So yeah, it's just idiots trolling, trying to feel like big shots. Whoopty fuck.

I definitely call bullshit on this rumour. I recently read an article on the Aquilini empire in some National Post magazine or something. A big chunk of their money comes from BC real estate; which, the entire market out there has gone into the tank (some of you may have heard about this, no?). Also, they have had to pour a lot more money into the Canucks then they thought they were going to have to, might need to build a new arena, blah blah.

They are also not that comfortable in their role as public figures as owners of that franchise, so it just doesn't sound legit that they would go out and buy another one. Especially when the Grizzlies failed so spectacularly.

Stern called the Vancouver Grizzlies one of his biggest mistakes as a commissioner in a BS Report Podcast a while back.  I can't see him letting them go back there. They'd probably go back to Seattle first.

I explored this a little further on my site a couple of days ago. It's certainly mostly rumour at the moment, but Aquilini has shown interest in the NBA before. Also, GM Place is pretty much an NBA-ready arena in a desirable market, and those aren't that common these days. Vancouver's chances are also boosted by Seattle's departure; there's a large chunk of population in the Pacific Northwest with no reasonably close NBA team at the moment. Vancouver's attendance wasn't horrible in the first go-round despite a disastrous team, and the climate is much more basketball-friendly in B.C. at the moment thanks to the success of Steve Nash and his youth league. Even if this particular rumour doesn't pan out, I wouldn't be surprised to see Vancouver strongly considered for an NBA franchise down the road.

Oh, and A., Stern called letting a team leave Vancouver his biggest mistake in that Bill Simmons podcast, not putting a team there in the first place. A lot of people with the NBA weren't happy with how the Heisley situation went down, especially considering how soon after expansion it happened. Meanwhile, Seattle's having huge troubles getting any support for necessary arena renovations, and the league isn't too happy with the city over the lawsuits and such filed to try and keep Bennett from leaving town. Vancouver's the more promising and likely option of the two cities in my mind.
