Drew Rosenhaus and the Florida Panthers Try Viral Marketing

There was quite the buzz this morning it the—ugh—Twitterverse, when people started noticing a curious tweet from NFL super-agent Drew Rosenhaus (@RosenhausSports), who you may remember from being coming off like a douche bag during his client Terrell Owens’ acrimonious departure from Philadelphia, and from supposedly being the basis for the title character in Jerry Maguire. As you can see above, it claims that he’s been hired by fans of the Florida Panthers to negotiate lower season ticket prices.

Blogs like With Leather picked it up, noting how it seemed more than a little preposterous that a franchise like Florida might conceivably be angering its meagre fan base with outrageous ticket prices. The Miami Herald’s On Frozen Pond blog also picked up on it, adding a threatening PR message that they’d received from Rosenhaus’ people:

As a longtime Panthers fan and a person who believes in giving sports fans the value and the atmosphere they deserve, I am absolutely thrilled to represent the Cats faithful at the bargaining table. That said, this a unique situation for me to represent the fans as opposed to professional athletes. But as a passionate Cats follower, I’ve got my finger on the pulse of the BankAtlantic Center faithful.

Also, if I can offer a word of advice for head coach Pete DeBoer, president Michael Yormark and the rest of the Panthers front office, ‘be prepared to go low on cost and high on value, and don’t get too comfortable because I’ll be knocking on your door in the next 48 hours.’

Anyway, fortunately Yahoo’s awesome Puck Daddy blog has brought some sanity to the proceedings, as they’ve got the real story: this is just a clever piece of viral marketing.

"Drew is working with us, and the premise of the marketing campaign is that he has been hired by Panthers fans to renegotiate season-ticket pricing with the club," said Matt Sacco, the Cats’ (really? The Cats?) director of public relations. "He was here yesterday to film two TV commercials and a couple of radio spots, and be involved in a couple of print ads. The campaign is launching next Tuesday, but we're starting it now virally."

I’m not sure how well viral marketing works once its exposed as such, but you have to give the Panthers—excuse me, the Cats—credit for giving it a try and coming up with a rather ingenious campaign. And hey, it’s working so far…

This was was always a douche bag.  Honestly I would not want an agent with a twitter page.

Clever from the Panthers though.
