Morning Link Dump – Georgia, Cubs, Jeter, Bills

georgia Obligatory Sports Babe

Sticking with the COED and their World’s Largest Outdoor Cocktail Party Sexy Superfan Showdown: Florida vs Georgia thing that was linked to in this space the other day, here we have some excellent representation for the Georgia.

Underreported Milestone

“The Chicago Cubs have reached a baseball milestone and it has nothing to do with their century-plus World Series drought. With the team's purchase by the Ricketts Family, the Cubs are the first Major League Baseball team to have an openly gay owner,” explains the Huffington Post. “Among the new owners is Laura Ricketts, an out lesbian who is also on the board of the gay rights organization Lambda Legal, the Windy City Times reports.”

No Enthusiasm For Jeter

The outstanding, stat-head site Fangraphs caught this hilarious exchange about Derek Jeter—and his defensive value—on this week’s episode of HBO’s Curb Your Enthusiasm: Stonemason: “That guy [Derek Jeter] sucks.” Larry David: “Who sucks?” Stonemason: “Derek Jeter, he’s the most overrated player in baseball.” Larry David: “What did you say?” Stonemason: “I can’t stand Derek Jeter, you know he’s the worst defensive shortstop in baseball statistically?” Larry David: “Oh Bullshit! He’s a great clutch hitter, he’s a great clutch player!” Stonemason: “There’s no way he deserves that kind of money he’s making.”

Let’s Go Buffalo

“A dismal performance on the turf Sunday inside Ralph Wilson Stadium might have yielded an unexpected benefit: just 14 arrests in and around the stadium,” reports the Buffalo News. ‘That's about half than what it's been running,’ Orchard Park Police Chief Andrew Benz reported. ‘I don't know what to tell you.’ Upon further review, Benz suggested that early departures by fans may have been the reason.”

Skateboarding

Unfortunately the first video—of the 1965 Skateboard Championships—in this series doesn’t work, but that doesn’t take away from the interesting look that Kottke has put together of the evolution of skateboarding, posting one video of what the sport looked like from each of the last few decades, including this gem from 1984: The Bones Brigade Video Show.
