According to the New York Times, as well as the Associated Press, who have the video above, disgraced track champion Marion Jones has been training with the San Antonio … um… Silver Stars. Jones has been out of jail for a year now, having served six months for lying to federal agents in the course of the BALCO steroid investigation.
“The W.N.B.A.’s president, Donna Orender, declined to comment on Jones’s plans, but a league official confirmed that Jones had contacted the league,” reported the Times. “Any decision on whether she will be offered a free-agent contract will be up to teams, a W.N.B.A. spokesman said.”
Jones was the starting point guard as a freshman on the 1994 NCAA Women’s champion University of North Carolina Tar Heels, and was drafted years ago by the Phoenix franchise, so at least at one point she had the skills to play in the league. Still, one can’t help but wonder how much of the WNBA’s openness to her has to do with getting the league some (presumably) much-needed press.
