Brian Burke Makes His Mark

On the first day of free agency, Toronto Maple Leafs General Manager Brian Burke finally backed up his words and put his stamp on the team.

Leaf fans thought major changes were coming at the trade deadline. Nope. We thought the draft would result in some big moves. Nothing. But today, we finally got what we were waiting for.

First, the Leafs signed Rangers tough guy Colton Orr. Not a big move by any means, but he definitely fills a void in the lineup left empty since the departure of Wade Belak.

Then, Burke traded Pavel Kubina and his fat contract to the Thrashers for rugged defenceman Garnet Exelby and forward Colin Stuart. Sure, the Leafs probably could have gotten more for Kubina, but Exelby is a good addition to the back end and it freed up some salary.

Finally, the Leafs signed Mike Komisarek to a 5-year/$22.5M deal. $4.5 million a season seems like a lot, but he should help in two of the most glaring holes we had last season, toughness and defence.

With today's moves, the defence corps is looking a lot stronger than it was last year:

  • Kaberle
  • Komisarek
  • Schenn
  • Exelby
  • Finger
  • White
  • Frogren
  • Van Ryn

True to his word, Brian Burke has made the Leafs a lot bigger and a lot tougher. No longer will the Maple Leafs be pushovers. No longer will Luke Schenn be the only one stepping up for his teammates.

He's building a team that the people of Toronto can be proud of again, a team that will play hard and stick up for each other. Well done so far Brian, well done.

The Leafs are definitely a lot tougher than they were last year, but I'll tell ya they're looking a lot like what the Sens defense looked like. Komisarek, Exelby, Finger, and Schenn to an extent aren't very good puck movers. White and Kaberle are the only guys from the backend that are even remotely close to being able to run a PP. So yes you're a much tougher team but I think the Leafs much like my Sens are going to have a tough time scoring goals next season.

Word is Burke would like to flip Kaberle for an impact forward, I have to ask, where is the skill going top come from on the backend. However, Burke might not be taking the direct approach and is just adding a few pieces for this season to make some real noise next season. In any case definitely a good job of toughening up, are you a better team today than you were last year?  Not sure but there's still plenty of time left before the season starts.

Does anyone know if a rumor coming out that the Leafs have offered Alex Tanguay a 4 or 5 year deal worth 15 million

@Riddick19

I think Stralman will run the Powerplay next year. He has lots of potential to take over Kaberle's spot, and this year should give him a chance to really show what hes got. He has tore up every place he played, even the World Cup. If he doesnt show anything good and we need someone else because we cant score, is that really a bad thing? lol no because we know werent not gonna win this year, so hello chance at Taylor Hall!

And you thought the Broad Street Bullies were tough.

Well now that my man Nash has signed a long term contract and Kovalchuk is on the verge of doing the same in Atalanta; perhaps it is time Burke shell a little of that money on a productive forward.  I know Briere is on the outs in Philly, but he may not be the sizeable player that Burke is so fond of.  Trading Kaberle should not be considered unless an impact player is coming to Toronto.  There are no rumours, no activity, but knowing Burke; something is brewing in Toronto.  It may not be a player, the magnitude of a Stanley Cup protege; but let us not dismiss a calbre player like Lecavalier pending the uncertainties in Tampa.  Make us proud Burke, do us proud.

Leafs forever!
