  • What to make of LaBarbera

Who would have thought that a few days into 2009 the Vancouver Canucks would be leaning on Jason LaBarbera for wins? What is going on? Ever since Roberto Luongo went down the goaltending situation has been dicey for the Canucks, yet Curtis Sanford and Cory Schneider seemed to be filling the void nicely. That is until Schneider's youthful inexperience began to shine through and Sanford decided to join his buddy Louie on the IR. In comes LaBarbera. In two games he's faired quite well - he won...

  • Six Pack Rankings: 10th Edition

    1. Calgary (20-11-4) The red-hot Flames became the first member of the Six Pack to reach the 20-win mark this week. Not to mention, they have only lost one game in regulation in their last 10 outings. Don't worry Flames fans, this blogger is aware of your team's Northward move in the standings. Now, can a team other than Montreal hold top spot for consecutive weeks? We'll find out in seven days. 2. Montreal (19-9-6) To the Habs and their great supporters, it's not you, it's the...

  • Kazakhstan vs Germany: from the stands

After the first few minutes, this game looked like it was going to be a long one for the Germans. But one thing the Germans have an abundance of is size. I think Kazakhstan had one guy over 6 feet, where the Germans are pretty much all over 6 feet, or at least it seemed that way. Losing 9-0 to a team who was just shellcked 8-2 by the Americans is definitely not a confidence booster. I kept trying to get a picture at exactly the same time the puck was going into the net, but it never happened. Next...

  • Six Pack Rankings: 9th Edition

With the holidays just around the corner, I examine the Six Pack for the ninth time this season. While the Canucks find a 6-5 Swede under their tree, the Oilers and Sens continue to find coal in their stockings. Here is my latest take on Canada's six teams. 1. Montreal (18-9-5) The Habs capped off another winning week with an OT win over Buffalo Saturday night, and they should keep it going with a home-date versus Carolina on Sunday. Montreal has hit their fair share of rough spots early on,...

  • So Long, Sundin

Mats Sundin is a member of the Vancouver Canucks . It's going to be really weird seeing him wear a different jersey. I just felt like he'd be a member of the Toronto Maple Leafs forever, but things change. However, I am glad that he chose the Canucks over the Rangers, and chose to remain in Canada. His motivation for staying in Canada is not the hockey however, it's the money. Mats said all along that he wanted to play for a contender if he came back, ending any chance of a return to...

  • It's official!

Oh baby it's going to be a Merry Christmas in Vancouver! Incase you haven't heard, Mats Sundin has jumped ship and signed a free-agent deal with the Canucks. Vancouver GM Mike Gillis officially announced this Thursday afternoon. This is amazing news for the Canucks and if you know anything about the team and aren't on board with this incredible acquisition, you've lost your mind. What does the addition of Sundin do to the Canucks? Great question. In short, everything. The secondary...

  • Trevor Linden

On the eve of the Trevor Linden jersey retirement at GM Place, all anyone in Vancouver can talk about is #16. It's tough to really describe the type of player Linden was and what exactly he meant to the Canucks and Vancouver. He was everything to this team when he was here and despite not delivering a cup to Vancouver, his legacy will live on forever within the organization. Everyone has their favorite Linden memory and I remember mine like it was yesterday: Tuesday, June 14, 1994 - I was only...

  • Six Pack Rankings: 8th Edition

After a two-week hiatus, the Six Pack Rankings are back for the eighth time this season. Have a look at where your team sits after a third of the NHL season has passed us by. Don't agree with me? As always, leave your comments, compliments, criticisms and insightful "feedback." Enjoy. 1. Montreal (16-8-5) Saturday's loss to the Capitals was a heart-breaker, but you are going to have those over the course of an 82-game NHL season, no matter how good you are. After their torrid start...

  • Life without Louie

Well it's no surprise that the Canucks are struggling without Roberto Luongo in net, I think everyone on the planet predicted they would spiral a bit when he went down on Nov. 22 in Pittsburgh. In stepped Curtis Sanford and it appeared as though all would be well, he won two straight as the Canucks surged up the division. Cory Schneider, an NHL rookie, was called up to play backup and in his second start he got his first win in the bigs. The problem has been that while there have been nice highs...

  • Six Pack Rankings: 7th Edition

    1. Montreal (13-6-4) After being out of the top spot for one measly week, the Habs reclaim their rightful spot as the top team in Canada. They hit a bit of a bump in the road, and still aren't completely out of the woods, but a big win over the champs and a character win last night over Buffalo will hide that blemish against the lowly Islanders earlier in the week. 2. Calgary (14-9-1) They're knocking on the door of the spot we all though they would be at some point or another, no.1 in the...

  • Enter Sandman

As the world's most famous groin injury heels, the Vancouver Canucks are leaning on Curtis Sanford and Cory Schneider to get the job done in net. So far, so good. Sandman, who has started two of Vancouver's last three games, is currently on a three game winning streak; his most impressive being a 32-save performance in a monumental win this past Monday night against the Detroit Red Wings. His last three wins have come against teams that won their respected divisions last season, so obviously...

  • Six Pack Rankings: 6th Edition

The Leafs and Sens continue to occupy the Six Pack basement, while there is a shake-up at the top in the latest instalment of the Six Pack Rankings. 1. Vancouver (13-6-2) The Canucks reeled off three straight wins to finish the week, including two impressive performances over the Rangers and Penguins. But the Canucks might have reached their peak. If Luongo's injury is as bad as it looked, the Canucks may quickly fade to the bottom of this list before you know it. 2. Montreal (11-5-3) About the...

  • Winds of change about to blow in Ottawa?

Are the Ottawa Senators finally giving up on Vermette? After Ottawa's shootout loss to the Rangers on Monday night, Vancouver scouts were supposedly in New York to take in the game. The Ohlund to Ottawa rumour has resurfaced and apparently Antoine Vermette is the bait. I'm in the camp that likes Vermette, but I'm tired of waiting for this future star to emerge. Tons of speed and no finish. Ohlund has a no movement clause and would have to approve a move to Ottawa. If I was him I wouldn't...

  • Churning the rumour mill

According to The Fourth Period , Canucks General Manager Mike Gillis attended the Senators/Rangers game last night in New York. At first this did feel like anything to be alarmed about, Vancouver is currently on a four-game road trip that had them on Long Island Monday night before hitting the Big Apple on Wednesday, so it's not like Gillis was there while the team was on a homestand. Then I clued in that Ottawa has been trying to pry Mattias Ohlund away from Vancouver for a few weeks now, albeit...

  • Six Pack Rankings: 5th Edition

A month and a half into the season and we now have a pretty good perception of all six Canadian teams' identities. Here is how the Six Pack stacks up as of November 16: 1. Montreal (9-4-2) It's hard to keep the Habs in the no.1 spot after a couple of poor weeks that have seen them lose four of five. Their only win this week was against the listless bottom-dwellers of this list, but the fact remains that if all six Canadian teams battled it out, Les Canadiens would emerge victorious. 2. Vancouver...
